26 Hacks for Self-Motivation – Motivate Yourself Everyday

Have you ever had a day when you had a lot of things to do, but didn't have the motivation?  I live plenty of those days.  Sometimes, I am so unmotivated that I allow my work to pile up like crazy.  And then the next few days are spent in the great agony of running to complete deadlines, with no time for fun or enjoyment of any kind.

Motivation means different things to different people. To some, it starts with getting up on time in the morning and running their day like a clock. While to others, it could just be that extra cup of coffee that keeps them going. Over the last year, I have observed people around me and have come up with a list of things that keeps them self-motivated.

45 Hacks for Self-Motivation, how to motivate yourself everyday, how to motivate yourself at work, how to motivate yourself when depressed, how to motivate yourself quotes

26 Ways You Can Motivate Yourself

1. Start small: Big is dangerous. It needs preparation - both physically and mentally, whereas small can be done with only a minute change. You want to leave sugar, don't go from soda and ice creams to buying non-sugary fruits in one day. Give your body some time to adjust. Start small, but keep it consistent.

2. Remove distractions: It works big time. I, for example, like to read witty comments in my Twitter feed. So the moment I allow myself to switch it on for a moment, other things attract me and soon I find myself looking at latest shoes or cute buns for short hair that I know I am never going to be perfect at. Your distractions will  not be many if you can make a list and dedicate time towards them out of your work hours.

3. Engage in small dares: Sometimes, a little adrenaline is what is needed to move us out of our comfort zone. You can dare yourself to face your fear, play like a kid, take a dance class, wave hello to random strangers, drink 5 glasses of water without stopping, try a sexier dress (even if you don’t want to buy, try it at least!) – do something that makes you live in the moment.

4. Try makeup: A new hairdo, eyeliner or a plain cherry color for lips – a change in how you look sometimes boosts mood and makes one feel happy. Focusing on self-care produces good feelings about the self and the nearby environment.

5. Tell yourself why you are wonderful:  This was a creative writing exercise that my language teacher used to make us do in the class. We were given an hour to write wonderful things about ourselves in a poem and create a vision of the future.  It sort-of made us touch our motivational resources and invited us to express ourselves.

6. Declutter your life:  Simplify your surroundings, weed out the activities that do not add anything positive to your routine/life. In her book Brain Building in Just 12 Weeks, Marilyn vos Savant notes that effective living is simple living. To strengthen intelligence and expand positivity of mood to carry on with a task, go easy on what you do and focus on doing only one thing at a time.

7. Write a letter to self: Use the days when there is not much action around to go into a journey within. Word it around the strong set of core values that define you and allow it to cover your hopes and ambitions. Use it to cultivate a sense of identity,  re-evaluate your current friendships or how to take better care of yourself.

8. Write your contribution to the universe: Sometimes, you need to expand your point of view to see what value-addition you are doing to the universe. It can be something as small as sending vibrations of peace, praying for a friend or feeding a poor.

9. Do a model runway walk: Put on some peppy music and get your modeling figure into action. Go nuts with your outfit, put on some bangles/jewelry/high heels and groove with the tone of music set by your system.

10. Try poetry: Poetry teaches us to live. Random words, verses, sentences bring in rhythm, shedding a sideways light on the world around us.

11. Do it for 5 seconds: Sometimes, a moment lasting as short as 5 seconds is what you need to get up and go. If you have any thought or instinct to do something, do it within 5 seconds or your brain will cut it out.

12. Let go of the waste: Waste thoughts, emotions, habits make it overwhelmingly hard to move on. Create a list of actions and chunk out the stuff that is not needed, including memories of previous hurts. Let them go.

13. Get your groove going: Play funky music, get into the beats, let the rhythm of it take you over. Listen to the lyrics, allow them to speak to you as if the song was made especially for you.

14. Visualise your goals: This is one of the oldest tricks in the sack. Write down your short-term and long term goals, visualize the satisfaction that you will feel after achieving them and use that feeling to get past your fears and doubts.

15. Reward yourself: Every kind of motivation works well then there is a reward attached to it. The reward can be something as small as a cookie or something big like buying a new car. Regardless of whether you are at the half-line or have already finished the marathon, reward yourself with something that motivates you to carry on.

16. By psyched up about yourself: You are unique. You can search the entire universe, but will not find anyone else exactly like you. God gave you life for a reason,  and it is your duty to find it, live it and be psyched about it.

17. Do an inner dialogue: Inner dialogues and positive self-talk can have surprising benefits. When you say things like "I am the best", "I like myself", "I can do it" or "I deserve this", you tend to reinforce the positivity around you which matters better by creating an aura of hopefulness.

18. Call someone: Your mom, buddy or neighbor next door – speaking to someone who makes you feel better about yourself is an instant motivator. Sometimes somebody else, a different person, can see what you are good at rather than you yourself. When you get such kind of positive people, even if it is for 2-minutes, their positivity tends to impact you too.

19. Read: A seemingly unrelated article/book/note can push you to do something that you have been trying to do. To make it better, develop a daily reading habit. It is going to put a long-lasting impact on your personality as well as how you perceive yourself.

20. Positive quotes go a long way: Sometimes reading the right kind of quote is just the motivation that you need to get up and get going. Read it on your phone, laptop or get a book. Read.

21. Find a visual motivator: It can be a photograph of self when you didn’t have that much weight around your waist, a stack of books that you want to read along your study table or a list of new healthy recipes that you want to try on. When you walk by your visual motivator every morning and night at least 10-20 times a day, the thought of it starts to get reinforced in your mind unconsciously. Find one thing, one big impact that you should focus on, and get a visual motivator to put it by your study table or near the place you sleep at.

22. Investigate: Why to keep a clear outlook right, why you should do that work or why you should lose the weight or why it is important for you to close the credit card debt? This physical activity builds in motivation for long term behavior.

23. Make a list of what makes you smile: Those little moments in your day that really brought you joy or made you feel excited. It sometimes makes it better to write them down so that you can instantly feel that rush of being happy.

24. Practice gratitude: From the moment we open eyes in the morning, we run towards what is important in the day. In the process, we sometimes forget to be thankful. Practice gratitude, say thanks to God, to nature, to your higher energy and use that gratitude to build up the motivation to get along with the day.

25. Face your fears: Think of the last moment when you decided to procrastinate something and how it made you feel. Use that guilt to get up now and get moving.

26: 20 seconds rule: Get just 20 seconds of insane courage to do something. Be bold about it, get ahead and do it. Be it about sending an email to a prospective client or going out for a jog, just use those 20 seconds to focus on one idea. Have the courage to go about it, and keep on doing it again and again and again.

Making Your Thoughts Count

We are shaped by our thoughts; we become what we think. When the mind is pure, joy follows like a shadow that never leaves.

“A human is a product of the thoughts he keeps.” – We know that and yet we choose to think rubbish. Take a moment to visualize your thoughts and you’ll see more than 98% of your thoughts would be either of the days that has gone by or of the future. Yesterday & Tomorrow.

And here we forget one of the most venerable teachings of life “Present is a PRESENT.” Why must we choose to endure pain long after the incident has happened? Why we worry about what is yet to come? Why must we give tit for tat? Why can’t we practice patience?

Let’s not be ordinary. Let’s do something special and make our good thoughts count. Let’s spread peace by being at peace with ourselves because with our thoughts, we make the world.

Development through Cooperation

On a daily average, how many of us spend time in reviewing our core values? Even though we know that our character development is dependent on it, it’s an investment that many have never given a thought to – and when we come in contact of others, we seek cooperation. The practice of ‘self realization’ begins when you start giving appointment to yourself.

From the moment we get up, ‘things to do’ dominate our mind and the whole day is spent in doing duties towards home and work. Have you ever wondered that how with time, we have changed from ‘human beings’ to human doings’? Taking care of ourselves physically, running off to office, socializing with friends and colleagues, attending to family matters, eating out, going for vacations – we are doing everything to keep ourselves busy but are unaware about what to feed to our mind, emotions and feelings?

I am not aware about the other countries but in India, stress is definitely on a rise. Not many people today are left untouched by anxiety, depression, insecurity, jealously or anger. You can be called lucky if you don’t feel these extreme sentiments frequently.
Overall development occurs when we cooperate with each other and with ourselves, have an attitude of forgiveness towards those who have hurt us, intentionally or unintentionally, and start seeing the BIGGER picture of being extraordinary in every activity – this world is full of those who are ordinary, so how are you different? Let’s begin with a ‘change in attitude’ and witness an overall development.

Best Way to Deal With People

The thumb rule in dealing with people is ‘Respect’. To gain respect, you have to give it first.

The character of a human being works in two ways- either you elevate the people you communicate with by understanding their true worth or you are minimising them. There is nothing in between when it comes to celebrating the essence of ‘human touch’. People are giving you best years, months, days or hours of their lives and it’s your duty to treat them with passion and let them know that their opinion is valued.

If we wish to develop a culture of successful people around us, we have to learn the art of nourishing every human talent. It is THE BEST WAY to deal with people.

Managing Stress

On the occasion of my friend’s marriage, I met a finance professional who has recently been asked by Coca Cola to be its Asia-Pacific head. As many people understand, it is a huge opportunity for anyone who aims to be CEO someday. This person is however not happy. Beyond the courtesy smiles he is a hollow person. He tells painfully that in his quest of becoming professionally big, he lost his family. His wife left him as he couldn't handle office stress effectively and children barely know him as he never had time for them.

Putting family, along with health, should always be the top priority for each one of us. Family matters too much and some people realise that only after they chase their dreams to reach a level only to find themselves along there.

Devotion to work is good but it shouldn’t cross the line to become stress. As adults, we teach our children to view the world and they will follow our leads. So let’s make a smart choice today. Let us have a look at our priorities again and restructure our lifestyle a little so that we can have a happier today as well as tomorrow.

Gaining Life out of Lost Moments!!

A philosopher once said: “Most people take the limits of their vision to be the limits of the world. A few don’t – join them.”

This is surely a superb point. The life that you see this very moment isn’t necessary the life of your future. May be right now you are viewing situations with the eyes of fear, rejections, limitations and false assumptions and you would be able to see a clearer picture once you wash off the stain from the glass window.

One of my good friends lost her life partner last month. Though she is a strong person and has her family supporting her completely in this moment of grief, she sometimes feels lonely and depressed. I don’t know what to say except – “this too shall pass”. I know it is difficult to face a situation like this but we all have to see some tough days, may be these are hers...

As Robert Frost says “one thing that is learnt about life through experience is that it goes on.”

No one is born with a guarantee of having a wonderful life – our attitude makes all the difference and this girl is certainly trying to cope up with the loss. I have seen many people who are filled with uncertainty and negativity; however there are still so very many great human beings out there – those who carry deep wisdom, who have big hearts and do not give up easily. We need to salute them and learn from their spirit as they gain life even out of lost moments.

Lessons of the weekend

As a child each one of us had curiosity to know more about the world. We were born as a genius but lost that gift as we adopted the lifestyle of limited beliefs. The experimentation that we should have done with life fades away to gave way to responsibilities.

I had a chance to meet the marketing head of a multinational life insurance company at dinner yesterday. He spoke of his dreams and how he is planning to go take a long break from his career and go in interiors to pursue his lifelong ambition of farming. He admitted having no knowledge about farming yet but practical experiences teach you more that what you intend to learn. I adore people like these: People who have guts to take risks to follow their dreams.

So, the thought for this weekend is:

Invest some time in learn something new each day. As you grow, you begin to see possibilities you didn't have the eyes to see before. Watch an inspiring movie, read a good book, listen to an audio program, visit a good blog, go to a powerful workshop or have a conversation with an elder. A single idea is all it takes to transform your life.

Personal Change Management

Old proverb: "people don't change when they see the light. People change when they feel the heat."

Why wait for difficulties to confront you before you pull back from the noise and rethink. Think again - who you are, what your priorities are, where you are going, why you are going there, how you want to shape your life and what values you stand for. Please remember - to succeed you will have to do things others don’t like to do, even if you don’t like to do them either – Have guts to rise above your feelings of the moment - and do what's correct versus what's trouble-free. And that's how you emerge as a winner of every moment.

Do you have time to Think & Thank?

We all are blessed in unique way. Some of us have brilliant jobs, others have money, few are loved deeply by their parents/lovers/kids/friends, we all have homes to live in, decent community to interact with, nutritious food to eat ....... the list goes on. Each of our encounters with outside world teaches us and shapes our prospective. I had a chance of meeting a CEO of a successful company last week. When I asked him the secret of his success, he smiled and said “I take out time to think and thank.” Every morning he spends 1 hour in deep reflection. He sits with his eyes closed and meditates for the day to come, thinks on action plan and thanks God for every moment that passes.

Taking out quality time from your busy routine is an excellent strategy for a successful day. Many people spend the best hours of their days agonizing over arguments, differences and non productive thoughts. Even though they are working but they, either do not put their best effort or mentally are occupied with happening of the past/worries of the future. All the energy, potential and time goes wasted through this way.

Being thoughtful and strategic is the number one step towards the route to greatness. Clarity always precedes success. By doing reflective thinking your wisdom will result in crisp and effective actions. Do not miss the “think and thank time” of the morning. It will provoke some amazing ideas and inspire some big dreams and others will be there to witness your success.

Instant Motivation Boosters

We constantly face struggle to gather the strength and courage to break through our internal fears. The anxiety of unknown constantly pulls us down. There are some who are stay optimistic and motivated to accomplish everyday tasks successfully and set long-term goals. On the other hand, there are some who avoid, procrastinate, and waste valuable time agonizing about their inability to carry out the simplest of tasks. So which group you belong to? What is the level of your intrinsic motivation?
The concept if motivation is not rare, almost everyone has it and practices it in some way. The problem arises when we forget our positive points. If that is the case with you, here are few motivation boosters that can be used anytime when you need a shot of confidence.

  • If he/she can do it, why can’t I?......

When others can do it, why can’t you? Why should you limit yourself by saying/thinking that the task in front of me is difficult? Nothing is impossible if you have the willingness to perform – do you agree?

  • I have come this far.......

Another motivation booster is to try reflecting on everything you’ve already done to accomplish your goals. Anything from skipping a single dessert during your weight loss program to sending out a resume in your job search will do. Think of the willpower and hope you displayed in that moment. Why should this moment be any different?

  • Visualize your goal.

Imagine about the moment when you’ve achieved your goal. Picture you mental state and the feeling of ecstasy by attaining one specific thing that you made real by sticking to your path. For quitting smoking – think about hearing a smoker’s cough and knowing you’ve left it behind. For getting promoted at work, think about opening your wallet and seeing a thick stack of fifties in it. An image like this is a great motivation booster, as it makes your goals feel concrete, tangible and real.

If a motivation booster listed above doesn’t work for you, do not loose hope. Just take few seconds to reflect on what you’re doing RIGHT NOW. You’re looking for help so that you can build momentum on the road to your objectives. It is surely a sign of an alert, active go-getter. Just the fact of trying to use a motivation booster to stay positive shows that you want to do the right thing and keep pushing onwards, so do it!
Do not forget that the implication of our actions decide our success. Life is worth living only because it’s not static. We wouldn’t have stayed happy that way – So enjoy and live fully – that’s the only way to live.

Let’s acknowledge our failures

We sometimes lose hope of success, when there comes a big obstacle that we fail to clear. All of us have failures of our own - at work, at home, in relationships, in life – the list is long. We wonder why this has happened, and start suffering from the dreaded disease of self pity by constantly thinking – Poor me.

Till some time back, I was also of the same kinds who could be ‘put off’ by failures quite easily. It took me time to understand my failures, actually. And Now I can see the bigger picture. I have been uncertain towards the better part of my life. Failure is the cost of greatness. Failure is an essential ingredient for a higher success. You can’t win without leaving your safety zone and taking some calculated risks. They don’t say it without any reason – no Risk, no Reward – and the more risks you are going to take in pursuit of your dreams; chances are that you are going to fail more often.

But that shouldn’t stop us from moving ahead – let’s learn to stretch today – life can be unpredictable, so make out the best of it – before it gets too late to even start.

Bigger the change, longer it takes to settle....

History is full of stories about monuments and how long it took to build them. Great Pyramids, Taj Mahal, Eifel Tower, Great Wall of China.... the list is long – it took years to make them and now they stand tall remind us of time when not many means were available to construct something but some people had vision and patience of making their dreams a reality. They knew that the generations later, their work will still be admired.

The point that I am trying to make here is that the larger the dream, the longer it takes. And the endurance becomes critical for our work Maybe, as you read this blog today, you are feeling frustrated over the fact that your richly imagined future is not your current reality, yet!

If it is so, I encourage you to keep in mind that the most excellent things take a little longer.

Don’t forget - if achieving bold and beautiful things were so easy - then everyone would be doing it.

Where do you stand?

Motivation and Self Esteem always go hand in hand. Got a chance to attend a session on motivation, this is what I liked:
Common Belief Issues - low motivation
Hopelessness - It is not possible to get what I want.
Helplessness - I am not capable of getting what I want.
Worthlessness - I do not deserve what I want.

Transforming Beliefs - moving to high motivation

Hopelessness to Optimism
Helplessness to Confidence
Worthlessness to Self Esteem

You are important, special and unique.
You have something to contribute.

So, where do you stand??

Intrinsic Motivation

Motivation is certainly a good topic to write an article on I think. If you know the way to intrinsic motivation, then you know the way to be successful. We all are different and therefore look out for different motivational solution to our need.

So, here is my suggestion of dealing with this issue:

Write, on a piece of paper, about yourself describing – what constitutes YOU? Like an introduction that you would give to a complete stranger. Now read it – Are you only talking about your work life because that is all in all about you, or do you have hobbies, interests, favourite pastimes, voluntary work that you can include? See yourself as being made up of components, like - your home life, relationships with your family, friends and even pets, your status in the community, local issues that you stand for and support, some volunteer work that you do for church or NGO, being in the local sports team, your passions in life, etc. Now I don’t profess to be lucky enough to have these many components in my life, BUT I have aims and ambitions to include them - either some or all, now or maybe later, and that helps drive and motivate me in the things I do and decisions I make. This should motivate you to be a much more complete person as you will gain diversified skills and experiences that will help and assist you in all your activities.

For every activity, there should be clear goals, and perhaps targets so that you know your status when you achieve them. If somehow you don’t make it in one, then you will still have other ‘components’ where you are achieving, thus a cause of remaining positive. If you ever find the more challenging one consistently challenging… don’t be afraid to change the component all together. A change of career can be refreshing and exhilarating and can do wonders for your motivation!

So, you see, motivation is a state of mind. Think positive and set your goals, and confidence to make positive changes should keep you on the right track and keep you happy!
