MiniPoetry

There
I was
Near
The inner
Dimensions
Of sanity

Where
There was
A minuscule
Assemble
Of my reality

Here
I was
Born to be
Free

Searching
Kindness
It left
Behind us

The birdsong
The language
Of crematory ashes

What remains
As I search
Tirelessly
For that place
And normality

Isle of Time

I am nothing but a little being!
Carry with me sixty wings
Time is slow for those who wait
Too long for those who grieve

Joy when fly on the unseen tracks
Never a minute comes back
It is precious; must do it well
For how it is used, I must one day tell

Waste minutes, hours go by
Day by day; years get lost
Make a life, strive
Use it wise to survive

Art to live just one thing,
Do the good that I seek.

Finding Your Calm: Why Inner Peace in Important

A man asks a monk if attaining inner peace was possible.  The monk smiles, and asks him to get water to drink first from a nearby river. The man obeys but when he reaches the river he notices that carts have passed through it which has made water muddy and undrinkable. He goes back to monk empty-handed. The monk asks him to wait for some time before going back and checking if mud has settled. The man does the same. He goes back after an hour and is surprised to see that water’s turbulence has settled and its surface can be seen clearly. He takes some of it back for the monk to drink. The monk smiles and shares the learning – when you let it be; the disturbance settles on its own!

Your mind is just like that. When it gets anxious, let it be. Don’t interfere or reason with it. Just give it time to calm down on its own while you harvest the peace that it comes with. When there is peace inside you, it spreads to the outside.  Your vibrations start filling the atmosphere with tranquility of your presence. Inner peace throws out negative emotions from the body by eliminating thoughts that create anxiety, unhappiness, stress and worries.

Why Do You Need Inner Peace?
Your mind is a culture of what’s happening around you. Inner peace gives a control on your own intelligence, actions and reactions. It is important to have that kind of control over self to bring your mind to a state of harmony and body to calm down. When the internal body mechanism is peaceful; your glands (Thyroid, Pituitary, Hypothalamus and Adrenal) work much well. With the effect of this inner synchronisation, the outer skin also starts to radiate peacefulness.

  1. Inner peace improves your ability to focus, allowing you to concentrate on important things.
  2. Calmness gives you a control over emotions.
  3. You become better equipped to handle your day to day affairs of work and personal life.
  4. Inner peace improves metabolism by reducing the disturbances of the body that disharmonise internal functions.
  5. Inner peace gives you resilience to stand by the matters most dear to you while reducing the temptation of setting in a routine.
  6. It makes your mind enhance its creative powers. You become better colour-coordinated, happy and radiant.
  7. Inner peace enables you to shed a lot of mental weights that aren’t yours to carry. It makes you light.
  8. Calmness encourages you to shift from the constant state of worry to love, which in itself is a miracle.
  9. You become full with joy and a source of happiness for others too.
  10. Resetting inner peace is a beautiful way to detox the body of harmful emotions like anger, jealousy and hatred.
  11. Inner peace gives you the power to deal with criticism. I have written an entire post on how criticism is not a reflection of who you are, but an opinion of someone who might have his or her own way of looking at things. It is a 2-minute read.
  12. Inner peace helps you to bring patience, tolerance and tactfulness in your character.
  13. When the body is mentally and emotionally calm, you can sleep better.
  14. Calmness helps you relax your body and nerves while building a positive attitude towards everything that happens in your life.
  15. The healing energies of the body show unmatchable, surprising results.

In short, inner peace makes life look brighter!

So good luck in finding your peace and when you do, don’t forget to write to me at sood(dot)nitima(attherate)gmail(dot)com. I’l love to become part of your journey in any small way I can. Till then, be good!

Mindful Meditation

Once Buddha came to speak at his sermon carrying a satin cloth in his hands. He asked people what they saw, to which everyone replied in unison that it was a beautiful satin cloth. Then Buddha started tying knots to it. After putting about five of them, he asked people whether it was the same cloth. People confirmed it was, though it was little
different now because it had knots.

To this, Buddha replied that it was what he wanted them to understand.

“You miss seeing the fine satin fiber lines because you are in knots.”

Mindfulness meditation teaches you to be the same cloth but without knots. He then asked the best way to open them, and if pulling the cloth from both sides would help the purpose. People replied that it wasn’t the correct way as it would in fact tighten the knots.

Acknowledging that, Buddha told them that even though most know it wouldn’t help, they still try to open their knots by pulling! He added that while the intention of an individual to overcome difficulties can be termed as good, the mean adopted to do it is not always the right one. In confusion of solving out something, most make it complicated.

“If you want to open the bumps, close your mind to disturbances, and untie them with caution.”

What is Mindfulness Meditation?
Mindfulness meditation is being in present. It means doing the current work with utmost clarity, patience and dedication. It is not a condition to be achieved, but a way of living. For example, if you are eating, being a mindful eater would mean that you are aware of how much to eat and stop when your stomach feels full. Mindfulness meditation makes you aware of your body, thoughts and surroundings.

According to the statistics listed on this website, mindfulness meditation improves anxiety levels 60% of the time. The same site lists reduction of risk of being hospitalized for coronary disease by 87%, relief in the symptoms of insomnia by 75% of the time, increase in productivity by 120% and reduction in PMS symptoms by 57% as some of the direct effects of mindfulness meditation.

Mindfulness Meditation Exercises
Most people think of meditation as a daunting task, because it is only when they sit in silence they realize clutter in mind. These are the random thoughts that go on, without necessarily having any connection with the present reality. Mindfulness meditation encourages to accept them and move beyond. Since body and environment influence thoughts and our reality, mindfulness teaches us to be kind and convert our clutter into something meaningful and loving. If you want to know some techniques for it, read on:

  1. Sit quiet and observe: For about 10 minutes every day, keep everything aside. Put your smartphone at a place where it can not disturb you and observe the little movements of nature around you. Ants, birds, leaves, wind, smell of soil, chirping of birds, noise of a dog bark, smell of cooking, sound of a car engine, blast of sunlight, ripples of water, colourfulness of flowers – there are many things that happen simultaneously around us. Find your centre and notice the comfort of sitting still.
  2. Put positivity in practice: Sweet words, like flowers, are essence of our innate nature. Speak slowly, but speak positively and if you want to learn positive thinking, read this.
  3. List the details: Anytime, anywhere – list at least 10 details of a place/moment/incident that you would not have otherwise noticed.
  4. Say no to multitasking: Doing more than one chore at a time wastes more time. Do a task fully before moving on to another one. You mind would want to jump, but resist the temptation of leaving something in between. Don’t let your mobile phone break your cycle.
  5. Develop 2/60 cycle: Spend every 2 minutes of an hour to embrace silence, mentally getting ready for the next one hour. Use mindfulness to give your mind some time to shift its wavelength one from task to another.

Benefits of Mindfulness Meditation

Clear mind: When you learn to control your thoughts and stay in the present, the mind stops wandering. It moves away from the buts and ifs, and stays where you want it to be. The calming effect increases concentration and reduces the chances of immoral behaviour.
Happiness becomes a choice: As I wrote earlier, recognising the importance of current time is bliss. Read a small story about it.

Positive Thinking & Meditation

Positive thinking is overrated.
How?
Let me give you an example – do you remind your name to yourself every day? “No”, right? Because you are so sure of it. You have been hearing it ever since you remember. You have developed a personality around it, and act according to it. That’s the surely you name has brought into your life.

So why not be sure of everything? Every task, situation, relationship – why not have the confidence that you have the power to sought it through? Why not practice spirituality at work and become the most awesome version of yours?
Searching ‘Positive Thinking’ on Google gives 2,96,00,000 results. More the interpretations, more the confusion over it. Let’s simplify:
  1. Positive thinking is the art of believing that everything is perfectly like as it is supposed to be. It doesn’t mean you keep on reminding yourself that. It means, you believe that.
  2. It is constant meditation. Being positive means to be in touch with your inner being and taking even the minutest decisions like ‘what to wear’ or ‘how to lose weight’ (in my case J) with peace. Playing meditation music in the mornings helps to build the mood.
  3. It reduces influx of stray thoughts, and keeps your mind focussed.
  4. It induces creativity. With a calmer mind, you observe more, and become less judgemental.
Nothing else, but a lot more. Keep on discovering!

World Peace and Me......

Our history has been marked with numerous stories of rivalry among world leaders which lead to conflicts and wars. Chiefs of different nations have often forced bloodshed on innocent people without any valid reason. The elected politicians, and those who work behind the scenes, must acknowledge that unity of humanity is the most important need of today. What world would we show to our children if we continue to abolish our culture like this? Our planet has suffered too much in the form of terrorist victims, poverty, non curable diseases, aimless youth and racism etc. Ideology of few narrow-minded people has brought us at a point where every nation has become selfish.

It is not difficult to achieve world peace if we have a vision towards it. Think, what plan of action we should have to make world peace a reality? Gone is the time when it was impossible to introduce such an idea to governments and political leaders. With ever-advancing age of technology, we can communicate our thoughts to each other instantly. Campaigns through the Internet and media evoke huge response, and we all are aware of that. Many concepts have been accepted with new theories and practices. So much is the power of communication that if an individual from past sees the advancements today; he would probably get awestruck by it. Leaders of the nations should appreciate the increasing involvement of people in current affairs and concentrate on making policies that will spread the wings of peace to every country.

Around the globe there are thousands who seek one common thing: world peace and its practice- they differ a lot in their views but have a universal goal. Time has come when we all must get united and stand against the prejudice of politics, region and race. The youth must join hands together, if they want to change the way world is progressing. One such effort has been done by students of University of California, Santa Barbara, who have conceptualized an idea to promote peace and prosperity. They plan to do so through the involvement of community, especially the youth. The group is developing a site www.worldpeacecontest.com which intends to get people close to each other through interactive channels, such as games, contests and quizzes.

First of its kind, the site promotes vision of world peace through a puzzle which is open to all for playing. Any visitor of the site can register himself/herself on it and complete for the contest, winners of which would earn cash prize. The group plans to donate some percentage of the amount collected through advertisements to different charities.

On the site, you will find their motive which is “collectively we can prove that the power of love and faith exists, by finishing our planet’s long history of hatred and killing”. Isn’t this what our religions also teach us?
